Passaic County residents are invited to take advantage
of the county’s recreational resources. The Department of Parks
oversees more than 16,000 acres of preserved open-space and
recreational lands, providing opportunities for residents to enjoy
outdoor activities year round.

The county also offers recreational activities that are educational
as well. At Rifle Camp Park in West Paterson, residents could enjoy
the nature center during the day and the astrological observatory at night.
The county preserved over 2,000 acres of Sterling Forest in 1988, and has
protected lands in urban areas for park’s use, and is continuously striving
to preserve and protect additional land for recreation. This year, the
Board of Freeholders unanimously created the Open Space and Farmland
Preservation Trust Fund Committees, to ensure that the county’s
recreational resources are protected for generations to come.
